HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an education and care setting is a nationally recognised childcare first aid course. It is for people who may need to respond to emergencies involving infants, children and adults. This includes early childhood workers, childcare workers, family day care educators, support staff and people working with school age children in outside school hours care and vacation programs.
The course is currently listed by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) as an approved qualification covering First Aid, Asthma and Anaphylaxis. It can help education and care services meet relevant qualification requirements. However, Regulation 136 does not mean every worker at every childcare service must personally hold this unit.

Online learning: Students must have basic digital literacy skills to navigate online platforms, complete assessments, and access course materials. Before enrolment, students should assess their ability to engage in online learning. Support is available where required. The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and associated assessment tasks.
Delivery mode: Online with face-to-face - The online pre-course learning and theory assessment is expected to take approximately 7 hours to complete. These timeframes are estimates. Individuals with prior experience in similar training may complete the online component in less time, while those new to the subject may need more time to complete all the learning content and theory questions.
Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.
This certificate has an industry-recommended renewal period of 36 months

HLTAID011 Provide First Aid Tasmania is the broader general workplace first aid unit.
It covers CPR and a wide range of injuries, medical conditions and emergency situations. It does not have the same education-and-care focus as HLTAID012.
HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation focuses on CPR and AED skills.
If you only need an annual CPR update, check what your employer or service requires. You may not need to repeat the full childcare first aid course.
Yes. HLTAID012 is a current nationally recognised unit of competency within Australia’s vocational education and training system.
It appears on the National Training Register within the HLT Health Training Package. The unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide first aid in an education and care setting.
It supersedes HLTAID004 – Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting. Training.gov.au records the two units as not equivalent.
If your employer or service gives you a specific current unit code, complete that unit.
ACECQA currently lists the unit nationally under First Aid, Asthma and Anaphylaxis.
It can contribute towards approved first aid, emergency asthma management and anaphylaxis training requirements under the Education and Care Services National Law and the Education and Care Services National Regulations.
ACECQA does not deliver the training or issue the qualification. The accurate wording is that HLTAID012 is listed by ACECQA as an approved qualification.
Regulation 136 sets first aid requirements for education and care services.
For centre-based services, qualified people must be in attendance and immediately available in an emergency.

Family day care has different requirements. Family day care educators and educator assistants must hold current approved first aid, anaphylaxis and emergency asthma management training.
This is why not every childcare worker has the same individual requirement.

DRSABCD gives learners a clear order to follow during an emergency response.
It covers key steps such as checking for danger, assessing responsiveness, sending for help, checking the airway and breathing, starting CPR and using an AED.
Learners apply DRSABCD during practical emergency scenarios. It is not taught only as theory.

Under the Education and Care Services National Regulations, approved first aid, anaphylaxis and emergency asthma training is generally considered current when completed within the previous three years.
CPR has a shorter currency period.
CPR and emergency life support training must have been completed within the previous year to be considered current under these National Regulations.
This means educators and services covered by these requirements generally need to refresh the CPR component every 12 months.
It does not mean every Statement of Attainment automatically expires after the same fixed period.
Check your employer, service or placement requirements before deciding whether you need to repeat the full course or only update CPR.
Participants who meet the theory and practical assessment requirements receive the applicable nationally recognised Statement of Attainment.
