Is HLTAID011 the first aid course you need?

HLTAID011 is general first aid training for people who may need to respond to injuries or medical emergencies in workplace and community settings.

It may be the right course if:

  • you have been asked to complete HLTAID011;
  • you need broader first aid skills rather than CPR alone;
  • you need training for work, study, placement or volunteering; or
  • you are refreshing a previous general first aid competency.

If you have been given a course code, use that code when booking. Workplace and industry requirements can differ.

HLTAID009, HLTAID011 or HLTAID012?

HLTAID009 – Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
Choose this if you only need CPR training or a CPR refresher.

HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid
Choose this if you need CPR plus broader skills for common injuries and medical emergencies.

HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting
Choose this if HLTAID012 has been specified for your childcare, education or care role.

Do not assume one unit can replace another because they cover some similar topics.

What is HLTAID011 Provide First Aid?

HLTAID011 covers the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response in line with recognised first aid guidelines.

Learners practise how to recognise emergency situations, assess casualties, contact emergency services and provide an appropriate response until further help is available.

Training follows guidance from the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.

HLTAID011 superseded HLTAID003 Provide first aid. If you previously knew this training as Senior First Aid or Level 2 First Aid, confirm the current unit required by your employer or organisation.

For other first aid courses, see First Aid & CPR Training Courses Tasmania.

What units are included?

Successful completion includes:

  • HLTAID009 – Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • HLTAID010 – Provide basic emergency life support
  • HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid

You do not need to book HLTAID009 separately when completing HLTAID011.

If you only need CPR, see the HLTAID009 CPR Course Tasmania.

You can also read about HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support.

What will you learn?

The course combines first aid knowledge with hands-on practice.

A core part of training is the DRSABCD action plan:

  • Danger
  • Response
  • Send for help
  • Airway
  • Breathing
  • CPR
  • Defibrillation

The DRSABCD action plan gives first aiders a clear sequence for assessing an emergency and deciding what action to take.

Other topics include:

  • cardiopulmonary resuscitation;
  • automated external defibrillator use;
  • unconscious casualty management;
  • choking and airway obstruction;
  • asthma and respiratory distress;
  • severe allergic reactions and anaphylaxis;
  • bleeding management;
  • burns;
  • shock;
  • fractures and dislocations;
  • sprains and strains;
  • chest pain and cardiac conditions;
  • seizures;
  • diabetes;
  • drowning;
  • poisoning;
  • bites, stings and envenomation;
  • heat and cold-related conditions;
  • infection control; and
  • incident reporting.

The goal is to develop practical first aid skills for an immediate response within the scope of your training.

What will you be assessed on?

HLTAID011 includes theory and practical assessment.

Online learning alone cannot demonstrate the practical competency required. Learners must perform first aid techniques and respond to simulated incidents.

Practical assessment tasks include:

  • adult CPR;
  • infant CPR;
  • AED use;
  • recovery position;
  • anaphylaxis and asthma responses;
  • choking;
  • bleeding and shock;
  • wound care and nosebleeds;
  • fractures and dislocations;
  • sprains and strains;
  • envenomation; and
  • completing an incident report.

Theory assessment checks the knowledge required to recognise emergencies and choose an appropriate first aid response.

Do I need to perform CPR on the floor?

Yes.

Learners must perform at least two minutes of uninterrupted single-rescuer CPR on an adult manikin placed on the floor. This forms part of the practical assessment under the applicable Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines.

You will also demonstrate AED use. Infant CPR is completed on an infant manikin on a firm surface.

If an injury, disability or accessibility need may affect your practical skills assessment, contact the training team before enrolling. Reasonable adjustments may be discussed, but the required competency standards still need to be demonstrated.

Duration depends on the delivery mode.

Refresher Face to Face

At least 6 hours of contact time.
