Course Description

HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an education and care setting is a nationally recognised first aid unit. It is designed for people who may need to respond to emergencies involving infants and children in education and care settings. It is often called a childcare first aid course.

The course covers CPR, child and infant first aid, asthma and anaphylaxis. HLTAID012 is listed by the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) as an approved qualification for First Aid, Asthma and Anaphylaxis. Moreton's current course also includes HLTAID009, HLTAID010 and HLTAID011.

The current HLTAID012 Hobart price is $200 per person. Training is available at Moreton Group's Hobart facility at 190 New Town Road, New Town TAS 7008. Check the live booking system for current dates, times, places and delivery options before you enrol.

Training and assessment are delivered on behalf of Allens Training Pty Ltd RTO 90909. Learners must pass the required theory and practical assessment. First aid, asthma and anaphylaxis training is generally current for three years under the relevant education and care rules. CPR and emergency life support have a shorter one-year currency period.

Is This the Right Course for You?

This is the current Australian unit for people who need to provide CPR in community or work settings. It replaced the older HLTAID001 unit.

If your employer, university, placement provider or professional body has specifically told you to complete HLTAID009, enrol in this exact unit.

You may need broader first aid training if CPR alone is not enough:

• HLTAID009: focused resuscitation skills.
• HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid: broader first aid skills and includes the CPR unit.
• HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an education and care setting: designed for people who have been told they need this unit for an education or care role.

Do not choose standalone CPR if your workplace or placement has asked for a broader qualification.

Who Takes This Course?

What Will You Learn?

The course develops the practical skills and knowledge required to respond when a person is unconscious and not breathing normally.

Topics include:

• recognising and assessing a cardiac emergency;
• DRSABCD;
• calling emergency services;
• adult and infant resuscitation;
• chest compressions and rescue breaths;
• using an automated external defibrillator;
• placing a casualty into the recovery position;
• changing rescuers with minimal interruptions to compressions;
• responding if a casualty regurgitates or vomits;
• infection-control procedures;
• conveying accurate incident details;
• reviewing the first aid response;
• recognising psychological impacts on yourself and other rescuers; and
• seeking help or support after an incident when required.

You also cover duty of care, consent, privacy, confidentiality, workplace procedures and the limits of your own personal skills.

What Does DRSABCD Mean?

Danger: Check for danger to yourself, the casualty and others.

Response: Check whether the person responds.

Send for help: Seek emergency medical assistance.

Airway: Check and manage the airway.

Breathing: Check whether the person is breathing normally.

CPR: Start resuscitation when required.

Defibrillation: Use an AED as soon as one is available.

These steps are applied during practical scenarios, not just studied as theory.

What Will You Be Assessed On?

Individuals undertaking the course complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

Practical activities include:

• performing CPR on an adult manikin;
• using an AED;
• placing a casualty into the recovery position; and
• performing CPR on an infant manikin.

The adult scenario requires at least two minutes of uninterrupted single-rescuer CPR on a manikin placed on the floor.

You must also perform at least two minutes on an infant manikin placed on a firm surface.

Other practical requirements can include changing rescuers with minimal interruptions, responding to regurgitation or vomiting and providing accurate incident details to emergency services.

Theory is assessed through written multiple-choice questions.

Successful completion requires you to meet all relevant requirements and be assessed as competent. Attendance by itself does not guarantee the nationally recognised outcome.

Physical Requirements

You must be physically capable of completing the required practical demonstrations.

Adult CPR is performed on a manikin placed on the floor. This means you need to kneel and carry out chest compressions and rescue breaths for the required period.

For the online pathway, pre-course reading, learning and theory are expected to take about 1.5 hours. Actual time can vary between students.

Can the Course Be Completed Fully Online?

No.

Online learning can reduce face-to-face contact time, but it does not remove the practical component. You must still attend in person to demonstrate the required skills.

Entry Requirements

There is no prerequisite unit listed for HLTAID009 on the National Training Register. However, Moreton Group and Allens Training have entry requirements that learners must meet.

Participants need:

• an accepted form of photo identification;
• enough physical capacity to complete the practical demonstrations; and
• suitable language, literacy, numeracy and digital skills for the learning and assessment activities.

Students complete a core-skills self-evaluation during enrolment. This helps the trainer identify possible support needs.

Online learners also need basic digital skills and access to an internet-connected device.

A Unique Student Identifier (USI) is generally required before a nationally recognised VET Statement of Attainment can be issued unless an exemption applies.

Renewal and Annual Refresher Requirements

The industry-recommended renewal period is 12 months.

WorkSafe Tasmania also advises that workplace first aiders should undertake CPR refresher training annually. Some employers, professional bodies and placement providers may therefore require proof of current annual CPR training.

This is not the same as saying every Statement of Attainment automatically expires under law after 12 months. Follow the currency requirement that applies to your role.

CPR and Workplace First Aid Duties

Tasmanian PCBUs must provide suitable first aid arrangements. This includes ensuring workers have access to an adequate number of people who are trained to administer first aid.

Completing this unit can form part of a workplace's first aid arrangements. However, it does not by itself satisfy every Australian or Tasmanian workplace health and safety requirement.

First aid needs depend on factors such as workplace hazards, size, location and workforce. Some workplaces may also require broader first aid qualifications or extra training for specific risks.
