HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an education and care setting is a nationally recognised first aid unit. It is designed for people who may need to respond to emergencies involving infants and children in education and care settings. It is often called a childcare first aid course.

Training and assessment are delivered on behalf of Allens Training Pty Ltd RTO 90909. Learners must pass the required theory and practical assessment. First aid, asthma and anaphylaxis training is generally current for three years under the relevant education and care rules. CPR and emergency life support have a shorter one-year currency period.

Online learning: Students must have basic digital literacy skills to navigate online platforms, complete assessments, and access course materials. Before enrolment, students should assess their ability to engage in online learning. Support is available where required. The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and associated assessment tasks.
Delivery mode: Online with face-to-face - The online pre-course learning and theory assessment is expected to take approximately 7 hours to complete. These timeframes are estimates. Individuals with prior experience in similar training may complete the online component in less time, while those new to the subject may need more time to complete all the learning content and theory questions.
Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.
This certificate has an industry-recommended renewal period of 36 months

HLTAID012 is designed for people who may need to give first aid to infants and children in an education and care setting.
It may suit early childhood educators, childcare workers, early learning staff, family day care educators, OSHC workers, vacation care workers and students on education or care placements. It may also be needed by people whose employer or placement has asked for this exact unit.
Parents and carers can also choose HLTAID012 if they want nationally recognised training with a strong child and infant focus. However, the formal unit is designed for education and care settings. Parents who have not been given a set unit code may wish to compare their first aid options before booking.
A job title alone does not decide which course someone legally needs.

This does not mean Moreton Group is "ACECQA accredited". ACECQA does not deliver Moreton's course, assess learners or issue the training outcome.
It also does not mean every person who works with children must hold HLTAID012.
No. Regulation 136 has different rules for different types of education and care services.
For a centre-based service, the approved provider must make sure suitably qualified people are present and available in an emergency.
The service needs access to someone with a current approved first aid qualification, someone with current approved anaphylaxis management training, and someone with current approved emergency asthma management training.
The same person can hold more than one of these qualifications.
Similar rules apply to relevant school-based education and care services. Suitably qualified people must be at the school site and available in an emergency.
Family day care has a different rule.
Each family day care educator and educator assistant covered by Regulation 136(3) must meet the required first aid, anaphylaxis and emergency asthma training requirements.
This is why it is important to check the rule that applies to your own service, role, employer or placement.

Learners also cover unconscious casualty care, basic first aid anatomy, differences between adults and children, emergency action plans and the use of first aid equipment.
The education and care part of the course also covers communication. This includes contacting emergency services, speaking with parents or caregivers, completing incident records, protecting privacy and reviewing a first aid response.

The course also covers incident reporting and communication. This can include speaking with emergency services, parents and caregivers after an incident.
These responsibilities are then applied during practical and scenario-based assessment.
HLTAID012 is not assessed through theory alone.
Learners must show that they can use their first aid knowledge in practical situations. The assessment uses realistic scenarios involving children and infants.
A learner may need to recognise signs and symptoms, check for danger, provide first aid, use equipment and contact emergency services. They may also need to report what happened and pass information to a parent or caregiver.
This helps the assessor check whether the learner can use first aid principles in an education and care setting.
Moreton's current HLTAID012 Hobart course includes written, practical and scenario-based assessment.
The theory assessment uses written multiple-choice questions.
Practical assessment covers adult, child and infant CPR. It also includes AED use and the recovery position.
Learners also complete first aid scenarios. These cover asthma, anaphylaxis, choking, bleeding, shock, nosebleeds, fractures, dislocations, sprains, strains and envenomation.
A simulated incident report is also part of the assessment.
Successful completion of all required assessment activities is needed for the nationally recognised outcome.
National assessment requirements include at least two minutes of uninterrupted single-rescuer CPR on an adult manikin placed on the floor.
Learners must also perform at least two minutes of CPR on a child manikin placed on the floor. Infant CPR is performed on an infant manikin placed on a firm surface.
AED use is included in the adult CPR assessment.
CPR is assessed in line with relevant Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines.
Moreton's current course information states that the required floor-based CPR must be completed for the accredited outcome.
If an injury, disability or access issue may affect your ability to complete a practical task, contact the provider before enrolling. Support or reasonable adjustment may be discussed. However, an adjustment cannot remove evidence that must be shown to prove competency.

Allens Training recommends first aid courses for learners aged 14 and over. Learners under 14 should attend with a responsible adult.
