Course Description

HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation is the current, nationally recognised CPR unit, and Moreton Group runs it at its Hobart training facility in New Town. If your employer, licensing body or industry has told you to complete or renew "HLTAID009" or "CPR training," this is the correct course to book. It suits workplace first aiders due for their annual CPR refresher. It also suits healthcare, aged care, disability, childcare, fitness and trade workers who need current CPR competency. You'll complete both a practical CPR assessment and a short written assessment. The practical component includes performing CPR on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor, plus AED use, the recovery position and infant CPR. There's no exemption from the floor-CPR requirement, regardless of delivery format. Several face-to-face and blended delivery pathways are available, but every pathway ends in a face-to-face practical assessment.

Training and assessment for HLTAID009 is delivered on behalf of Allens Training Pty Ltd RTO 90909. Once you've completed the course, industry guidance recommends refreshing your CPR skills every 12 months. HLTAID009 is not the same unit as the older, superseded HLTAID001. It's also a CPR-only course — if your employer has asked for the broader "Provide First Aid" certificate, you'll need HLTAID011 instead of HLTAID009 on its own.

How HLTAID009 is delivered - face-to-face, blended and refresher options

HLTAID009 is available in several formats. All of them end in a face-to-face practical assessment — there's no fully online pathway to certification.

What HLTAID009 covers

HLTAID009 teaches the skills and knowledge to respond to a cardiac or breathing emergency, in line with Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines. The course covers:

• recognising and assessing an emergency using a structured approach (the DRSABCD action plan), and checking for danger to yourself, the casualty and bystanders
• calling for emergency medical assistance
• CPR for adults and infants, including chest compressions and rescue breaths
• using an automated external defibrillator (AED)
• placing an unconscious, breathing casualty into the recovery position
• responding if a casualty regurgitates or vomits during CPR
• basic infection-control precautions
• communicating clearly when handing a casualty over to arriving paramedics
• reviewing the incident afterwards and recognising the possible psychological impact on rescuers, including where to seek support

What you'll be assessed on - practical skills and theory

Successful completion requires both a hands-on practical assessment and a written assessment. Attending the course alone doesn't guarantee a certificate.

Practical skills assessment includes:

• performing CPR on an adult resuscitation manikin
• using an AED, including delivering a simulated shock
• placing a casualty into the recovery position
• performing CPR on an infant resuscitation manikin

The national unit requires at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single-rescuer CPR on the adult manikin, on the floor. It also requires at least 2 minutes of CPR on the infant manikin, on a firm surface. To issue the accredited certificate, CPR must be performed on the floor — there are no exemptions for this, regardless of delivery format. Theory assessment is a written, multiple-choice test.

How HLTAID009 is delivered - face-to-face, blended and refresher options

HLTAID009 is available in several formats. All of them end in a face-to-face practical assessment — there's no fully online pathway to certification.

These are minimum face-to-face contact times. Actual sessions can run longer, and how long the online theory takes depends on your prior experience — some learners move through it faster, others need more time. Online learning still requires an in-person practical assessment; it isn't a substitute for it.

Renewal & ARC guidance - how long does HLTAID009 last?

Moreton Group lists an industry-recommended renewal period of 12 months for HLTAID009. The Australian Resuscitation Council's Guideline 10.1 (Basic Life Support Training) recommends that people trained in CPR refresh their skills at least annually. Safe Work Australia's Model Code of Practice for First Aid in the Workplace gives the same annual guidance for workplace first aiders. This is currency guidance, not a fixed legal expiry date on your Statement of Attainment. Your employer, industry body, licensing regulator or placement provider may set their own specific requirement, so it's worth checking what applies to you.

When does HLTAID009 expire? Your Statement of Attainment records that you successfully completed the unit — it doesn't carry a printed expiry date. What changes after 12 months is your CPR currency. The 12-month industry-recommended window — backed by ARC and Safe Work Australia guidance — is what most employers and regulators use to judge whether your CPR skills are still current.

Certificate and Statement of Attainment

Moreton Group's own course materials refer to this as a "certificate." The more technically precise VET term for completing a single unit like HLTAID009 is a Statement of Attainment. Both describe the same nationally recognised outcome, issued on behalf of Allens Training Pty Ltd RTO 90909. To receive it, you'll need a Unique Student Identifier (USI), and you'll need to meet all theory and practical assessment requirements — payment or attendance alone doesn't guarantee certification. Eligible learners who successfully complete everything may receive their outcome the same day, subject to current processing requirements.

Is HLTAID009 the same as HLTAID001?

No. HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation superseded the older HLTAID001 unit as part of national training package updates. HLTAID001 is a superseded unit and shouldn't be booked for new training — training providers no longer deliver it for new enrolments. HLTAID009 and HLTAID001 cover the same broad CPR training area, but ASQA records them as non-equivalent units, because HLTAID009 reflects updated requirements.
