Course Description

The course applies to individuals who will be able to recognise and respond to emergency situations that may require them to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on a casualty in a range of situations, including the application of oxygen therapy or oxygen resuscitation, as appropriate, until the arrival of medical assistance. The course is delivered in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines.

This course is applicable to workers or nominated workplace first aiders from an industry sector where they may be required to provide CPR and basic oxygen therapy in an emergency situation, as part of their role at work or in the community at large.

Course Delivery

This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

Course Durations

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

  • Refresher: face-to-face contact time of at least 5 Hours
  • Blended: face-to-face contact time of at least 5 Hours
  • Face-to-Face: face-to-face contact time of at least 6 Hours
Entry Requirements

An individual undertaking the Course in Basic Oxygen Administration for First Aid must be able to demonstrate current competence in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. All participants of this course set will be completing the HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation unit of competency and will meet the entry requirement.

Furthermore, an individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

  • An official form of photo identification (e.g., driver’s licence, passport, or student ID).
  • Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills including CPR*
  • To successfully complete this course, students will need to demonstrate the following language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND) skills during training and assessment:
    • Learning: I can follow step-by-step instructions and ask for help when I need more information.
    • Reading: I can read and understand short instructions, warning labels, and signs on equipment.
    • Writing: I can fill out basic forms and write down key details about an incident or situation.
    • Oral communication: I can listen to instructions, speak clearly, and ask questions when I’m unsure.
    • Numeracy: I can use simple numbers to count chest compressions, read numbers on a timer or gauge and understand basic timing or dosage information.
    • Digital Literacy: Able to use a mobile phone or basic device to read messages, follow online instructions, complete online forms or access learning resources

It is recommended that participants in this course have literacy and numeracy competencies equivalent to the Australian Core Skills Framework Level 2. An example of ACSF Level 2 is being able to request appropriate emergency assistance at the scene of the incident.

*Important note: In order to issue an accredited certificate, CPR must be performed on the floor with no exemptions.

Online learning: Students must have basic digital literacy skills to navigate online platforms, complete assessments, and access course materials. Before enrolment, students should assess their ability to engage in online learning. Support is available where required. The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and associated assessment tasks.

Assessment Requirements

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

Assessment Activities

Assessments conducted during the face-to-face training session(s) include:

Practical scenarios and performance tasks:

  • Adult CPR (including defibrillation and placing the casualty in the recovery position)
  • Infant CPR
  • Administer oxygen to an adult and child

Documentation: Completion of an incident report form

Theory assessment: A written assessment consisting of short-answer and multiple-choice questions.

Students are required to complete a self evaluation against the following core skills as part of enrolment. This helps identify any support required during training and assessment.

  • Reading: I can understand safety instructions, labels and emergency procedures

  • Oral communication: I can provide clear updates and emergency information
  • Numeracy: I can monitor time, counts and oxygen flow information
