Course Description

This course is designed to provide the knowledge and skills required by an individual to provide a first aid response to a casualty in a range of situations and to recognise and respond to situations that require the application of first aid oxygen therapy or oxygen resuscitation, as appropriate, until the arrival of medical assistance. The course can be delivered in any industry where persons may be required to provide first aid and basic oxygen therapy in an emergency situation, as part of their role at work, or in the community.

It is designed and delivered in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.

Units Delivered

  • HLTAID009 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • HLTAID010 - Provide basic emergency life support
  • HLTAID011 - Provide First Aid

Course Delivery

This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

Course Durations

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount:

  • Refresher: Face to face contact time of at least 9 Hours
  • Blended: Face-to-face contact time of at least 9 Hours
  • Face-to-Face: Face to face contact time of at least 9 Hours
  • Online with face-to-face assessment: Face to face contact time of at least 4 Hours
Entry Requirements

An individual undertaking the Course in Basic Oxygen Administration for First Aid must be able to demonstrate current competence in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. All participants of this course set will be completing the HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation unit of competency as part of this course and will meet the entry requirement.

It is recommended that participants in this course have literacy and numeracy competencies equivalent to the Australian Core Skills Framework Level 2. An example of ACSF Level 2 is being able to request appropriate emergency assistance at the scene of the incident.

Furthermore, an individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

  • An official form of photo identification (e.g., driver’s licence, passport, or student ID).
  • Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills including CPR *
  • To successfully complete this course, students will need to demonstrate the following language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND) skills during training and assessment:
    • Learning: Follow step-by-step instructions, ask for help, and apply what I’ve learned in an emergency.
    • Reading: Read and understand safety signs, labels, and basic first aid or equipment instructions.
    • Writing: Fill in simple forms or write short notes to describe what happened and what I did.
    • Oral communication: Listen to instructions, ask questions, and speak clearly during a first aid situation.
    • Numeracy: Use basic numbers to track time, read gauges, or follow simple dosage instructions.
    • Digital Literacy: Able to use a mobile phone or basic device to read messages, follow online instructions, complete online forms or access learning resources

*Important note: In order to issue an accredited certificate, CPR must be performed on the floor with no exemptions.

Online learning: Students must have basic digital literacy skills to navigate online platforms, complete assessments, and access course materials. Before enrolment, students should assess their ability to engage in online learning. Support is available where required. The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smart phone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and associated assessment tasks.

Delivery mode: Online with face-to-face - The online pre-course learning and theory assessment is expected to take approximately 5.5 hours to complete. These timeframes are estimates. Individuals with prior experience in similar training may complete the online component in less time, while those new to the subject may need more time to complete all the learning content and theory questions.

Assessment Requirements

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

Assessment Activities

Assessments conducted during the face-to-face training session(s) include: 

Practical scenarios and performance tasks

  • Perform CPR on an adult (incl. the use of an AED and placing a casualty into the recovery position)
  • Perform CPR on an infant
  • Manage a casualty with anaphylaxis
  • Manage a casualty with asthma
  • Manage a choking casualty
  • Manage a casualty with non-life-threatening bleeding and shock, requiring minor wound cleaning
  • Manage a casualty with a nosebleed
  • Manage a casualty with a fracture and dislocation
  • Manage a casualty with a sprain and strain
  • Manage a casualty with envenomation (snake/ funnel-web spider bite)
  • Administer oxygen to an adult and child

Documentation: Completion of an incident report form

Theory assessment: A written assessment consisting of short-answer and multiple-choice questions.

Students are required to complete a self evaluation against the following core skills as part of the enrolment process. This allows the trainer to understand any additional support that may be required during course delivery and assessment.
