Course Description

Learning content and relevant knowledge assessment of this course are delivered in an online format, followed by face-to-face practical skills assessment session. During the face-to-face practical session, additional learning content and knowledge questions not covered in the online component, will also be addressed. This course provides practical simulated real-life situations to learn and gain the confidence to coordinate and manage a response and provide advanced first aid in line with legal, community and workplace considerations, Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines and other Australian national peak clinical bodies until emergency services arrive.

It also includes instruction on first aid and CPR, as well as treatments specific to advanced conditions, such as hypothermia or hyperthermia, head, neck and spinal injuries, using tourniquets and haemostatic dressings for life-threatening bleeding, managing a casualty in shock and providing oxygen in a range of complex situations, including community and workplace settings. Simulated real-life situations will be used to develop the skills and knowledge for using and maintaining specialised equipment for the provision of first aid, resuscitation, and oxygen therapy.

Entry Requirements

An individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

  • An official form of photo identification (e.g., driver’s licence, passport, or student ID).
  • Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills including CPR*
  • To successfully complete this course, students will need to demonstrate the following language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND) skills during training and assessment:
    • Learning: Take in detailed instructions quickly, stay calm, and apply what I’ve learned to respond to serious situations.
    • Reading: Read and understand emergency procedures, equipment labels, and oxygen use guidelines.
    • Writing: Write clear, accurate reports that describe what happened and what first aid or resuscitation was given.
    • Oral communication: Speak clearly and confidently when giving or receiving information during an emergency.
    • Numeracy: Use numbers to check times, measurements, oxygen flow, and treatment steps in the right order.
    • Digital Literacy: Able to use a mobile phone or basic device to read messages, follow online instructions, complete online forms or access learning resources

*Important note: In order to issue an accredited certificate, CPR must be performed on the floor with no exemptions.

Online learning: Students must have basic digital literacy skills to navigate online platforms, complete assessments, and access course materials. Before enrolment, students should assess their ability to engage in online learning. Support is available where required. The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smart phone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and associated assessment tasks.

Delivery mode: Online with face-to-face - The online pre-course learning and theory assessment is expected to take approximately 8 hours to complete. These timeframes are estimates. Individuals with prior experience in similar training may complete the online component in less time, while those new to the subject may need more time to complete all the learning content and theory questions.

Assessment Requirements

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

Assessment Activities

Online theory assessment: A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions.

Face to face assessment* of performance tasks and practical scenarios

  • Simulated First Aid Scenario – Perform CPR on an adult (incl. the use of bag-valve-masks, oxygen equipment, an AED and placing the casualty into the recovery position )
  • Perform CPR on an infant
  • Manage a casualty with anaphylaxis
  • Manage a casualty with asthma
  • Manage a choking casualty
  • Manage a casualty with non-life-threatening bleeding requiring minor wound cleaning
  • Manage a casualty with a nosebleed
  • Manage a casualty with a fracture and dislocation
  • Manage a casualty with a sprain and strain
  • Manage a casualty with envenomation (snake/ funnel-web spider bite)
  • Coordinate a multiple casualty incident 
  • Manage a casualty with life-threatening bleeding and shock and provide supplemental oxygen
  • Maintain resuscitation equipment
  • Complete two separate incident report forms 

*Additional learning and theory assessment will be conducted during the face to face session, not fully covered in the online learning content.

Students are required to complete a self evaluation against the following core skills as part of the enrolment process. This allows the trainer to understand any additional support that may be required during course delivery and assessment.
