Course in Safe Handling of Sharps and Infectious Waste

The following units will be included in your certificate:

• 11124NAT - Safe Handling of Sharps and Infectious Waste
• NAT11124001 - Remove Sharps and Infectious Waste Safely

This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

• Refresher: face-to-face contact time of at least 2 Hours 30 Mins
• Face-to-Face: face-to-face contact time of at least 4 Hours
• Online with face-to-face assessment: face-to-face contact time of at least 1 Hour

An individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

• Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills
• Language, literacy and numeracy skills to read and interpret policy, procedural and legislative documents
• Oral and written communication skills to clarify/follow instructions and complete report documentation

Online study options: Students must have access to a computer, smart phone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and practical assessment.

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

This certificate does not require renewal

Performance tasks:

• Basic disposal of a single exposed sharp
• Complex disposal of multiple exposed and hidden sharps
• Disposal of infectious waste

Documentation – The student must complete all documentation according to the required standard:

• Complete a risk assessment

Theory assessment - A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.

Students are required to complete a self evaluation against the following core skills as part of the enrolment process. This allows the trainer to understand any additional support that may be required during course delivery and assessment.

• Learning: I can follow safety instructions, identify hazards and learn new procedures to handle sharps and infectious waste
• Reading: I can read and understand safety signs, labels and simple workplace documents
• Writing: I can fill out basic forms and write short reports about incidents or procedures
• Oral communication: I can ask questions and explain safety concerns clearly to others
• Numeracy: I can measure and record quantities accurately, such as time
